Discover the Unique Terroir of Sachau Vineyard in Livermore Valley
Have you ever wondered where the Murrieta’s Well Cabernet Sauvignon in your glass comes from? Or perhaps the Merlot you’ve enjoyed at our Livermore Valley tasting room? Many of the wines you love from Murrieta’s Well originate from Sachau Vineyard, a remarkable site that produces some of our most cherished wines.
Located in the Livermore Valley wine country, Sachau Vineyard offers a unique landscape that contributes to the distinctive character of our wines. The vineyard’s terroir, elevation, and soil composition create exceptional growing conditions for premium grape varieties.
A Legacy of Preservation: The History of Sachau Vineyard
Sachau Vineyard was established through a longstanding partnership between the Wente and Sachau families, both dedicated to preserving the region’s agricultural heritage. Originally a cattle ranch, this land was transformed into vineyard acreage as part of the South Livermore Valley Area Plan, a conservation effort that protects agricultural land for future generations.
This vision ensures that Sachau Vineyard remains a cornerstone of Livermore Valley’s wine-growing legacy, producing high-quality Bordeaux-style wines for decades to come.
Terroir That Defines Murrieta’s Well Wines
Just south of Sachau Vineyard, the Murrieta’s Well estate and tasting room sits on one of the original vineyard sites in Livermore Valley. Surrounded by vines and boasting a historic, elevated barn aesthetic, Murrieta’s Well offers an intimate tasting experience where guests can enjoy wines crafted from this special terroir.
What makes Sachau Vineyard’s fruit so exceptional? The answer lies in its unique hillsides and well-draining soils.
- The vineyard sits at 600 to 850 feet in elevation, with Positas gravelly loam soil, a medium that allows for excellent drainage and optimal vine health.
- The diverse terrain supports a mix of varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—key components in many of Murrieta’s Well’s most beloved blends.
- Merlot, the most planted variety, spans 39.8 acres. To enhance complexity, the vines are strategically planted with varying sun exposures, resulting in layered, expressive wines.
